The Kogan signature

The collage as a work of art.

The perfect collage is a work of art.

— Jean Marcotte

Not a print order. Three photographs chosen to hang together, matted and framed as one piece, so what goes on the wall is a single object rather than three souvenirs of the same afternoon.

It is designed with Jean himself at your Reveal Meeting, and framed in our own studio in Toronto, just north of Yorkdale.

Three photos complement each other, flowing like a story left to right.

— Jean Marcotte

The left frame opens: a wide shot, the place, the walk in. The centre holds — the closest, quietest frame of the three. The right answers it, and sends the eye back to the beginning.

That is why the order is fixed once it is chosen. Shuffle the three and the story stops reading.

Flavouring through contrast and complications creates stories within stories.

— Jean Marcotte

Colour on the outside, sepia or black and white in the middle. A candid against a portrait. One frame busy with trees, the next almost empty.

The contrast is what stops the eye on the way past, and it is the same rule the collages on the home page follow.

A simple series of three images, when looked at like art, can reveal hidden stories.

— Jean Marcotte

Clients tell us they keep finding things in them years later — a hand, a glance, the weather changing between the first frame and the last.

That is the test of the piece: it should still be giving something back on the thousandth walk past it.
